Makawao Travel Guide
Welcome to Makawao!
Long before the wild west was settled by mavericks on horseback, the Hawaiian town of Makawao was known for its paolinos, or cowboys. This rustic upcountry town still celebrates the frontier way of life. Unlike the beach culture of many other Maui communities, the main street could be the setting for a Western, and ranchers still herd cattle across the sprawling volcanic landscape outside town. The earthy scent of horses and saddles permeates the air during the annual rodeo and parade held each July.
But this rapidly growing community has much more to offer than cowboy culture. The Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center is a gathering point for local artists, who display various works in addition to hosting open houses and stimulating workshops.
Mount Haleakala is just outside of Makawao, and beckons visitors to drive or hike up its lush mountainside to the summit where they are rewarded with spectacular sunrises and stunning views of the North Shore. The climate is moderate, but the 1,400 ft (427 m) elevation means warm days are generally followed by cool evenings and spectacular sunsets.
